In this suite of works, Siavash Tohidi examines architecture and displacement in considering the rowhomes of Baltimore. Tohidi perceives space as a “pre-existing void endowed with formal properties alone”, to quote Lefebvre. As such, the spectator becomes a digital cartographer that surveys facades, texture,s and surfaces in pursuit of filling the void; the eyes become observatories mimicking the vision of a satellite rendering the spaces as blurry digital imagery. This series is an attempt at representing the fading image of the rowhomes through three dimensional drawings that tend to see through the façade and the image.
Born and raised in Tehran, Siavash Tohidi is an artist currently living in Lexington, Kentucky where he teaches at the University of Kentucky’s School of Art and Visual Studies. He earned his BFA in Crafts from the University of Art in Tehran, and he received his MFA in Sculpture and Expanded Practice from Ohio University School of Art+Design. He works in various media and he has exhibited his work in several national and international juries shows.
