OFFSIDES, a collaborative exhibition between Dodd MFA candidate, Luka Carter, and New York-based artist, Tomm Roeschlein, uses a variety of media–video, sculpture, printmaking, and movement–to articulate tensions within performance and the body. In constructing the gallery as a gym, the artists rely on metaphors generally regulated to athletic pursuits in order to more deeply investigate ideas surrounding progress, precarity, and play. The artists see the condition of sports as a framing device. And while the term “art jock” might seem like an oxymoron, Carter and Roeschlein correlate the active process of art making to the physicality and spirit of sports. OFFSIDES, generally a negative term or foul in soccer, is used here to subvert the boundaries of rules and regulations. In their re-negotiation of sports and art, the artists perpetuate further musings and re-imaginings of childhood, masculinity, collectivity, and the art of failure.
Luka Carter (b. 1990, Los Angeles) is an interdisciplinary artist who lived on a boat for three years in Rockaway Beach, NY, a trailer in Bolinas, CA and plenty of places in between.The friends and community that he finds in each of these places has allowed for a strong, beautiful network of friendship and artistic collaboration, similar to what futurists might call tentacularity – “about life lived along lines, not at points, not in spheres.” With a background in construction and manual labor, Luka has a knack for making space for art in overlooked or interstitial spaces–– including an outhouse, abandoned lot, and a van. His practice spans zines, furniture, tattoos, ceramics, clothing, and installations. He is currently pursuing his MFA at the Lamar Dodd School of Art.
Tomm Roeschlein (b. 1986, Indiana) is a Filipino American photographer and artist. He lives and works in Hudson, NY. Inspired by moments in motion and the fluidity and improvisation embedded in the everyday. Tomm’s work focuses on communities and the individuals that make them up. He has exhibited at University Art Museum, Albany, New York (2019) Baba Yaga at Grand Buffet, Hudson, New York (2019) and Incident Report, Hudson, New York (2018).
