10th Annual Spotlight on the Arts Festival

The School of Art is pleased to highlight several events and exhibitions happening at the Dodd Galleries and the Athenaeum this November as we participate in the University of Georgia Arts Council’s 10th annual Spotlight on the Arts festival. Among more than 60 offerings in this month-long celebration of literary, performing, and visual arts, the Dodd Galleries and the Athenaeum will present artist talks from Dawn Williams Boyd and Pam Longobardi, a performance from FlucT, a lecture from Teddy Cruz and Fonna Forman, diverse ongoing exhibitions, and the 2021 Open Studios event.

On November 9th, 5:30pm, Teddy Cruz and Fonna Forman will give a virtual Zoom lecture on their research-based political and architectural practice, Estudio Teddy Cruz + Fonna Forman. Teddy Cruz is a Professor of Public Culture and Urbanism in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of California, San Diego and Fonna Forman is a Professor of Political Theory at the University of California, San Diego and Founding Director of the Center on Global Justice. Together, they investigate issues of informal urbanization, civic infrastructure and public culture, with a special emphasis on Latin American cities. Their work blurs conventional boundaries between theory and practice, and merges the fields of architecture and urbanism, political theory and urban policy, visual arts and public culture. Atlanta-based conceptual artist Pam Longobardi will give an artist talk on November 10th, 5:30pm, in auditorium S151 at the Lamar Dodd School of Art. Longobardi is the recipient of the 2021 Margie E West Prize, an annual prize given to an esteemed alumni from the Lamar Dodd School of Art, inviting the artist to create a new exhibition for the Marjorie Eichenlaub West Gallery. Longobardi’s exhibition, Flat Earth: A Visitation, presents a selection of recent paintings imagining beautiful disasters in distant, post-historic futures. Flat Earth: A Visitation will be on display from October 14th to November 18th.

The Athenaeum, the university’s recently opened contemporary art space at 287 West Broad Street, will host a performance by the New York-based experimental performance duo FlucT, Sigrid Lauren and Monica Mirabile, on November 12th, 7pm. FlucT Creates original soundscapes linking a manipulated pop music psychosis with violently intimate dance; their compositions become projections aimed at exposing authorities of control in the United States capital culture. Their productions include duets, video installation, original scores, sculpture, and choreography. 

The 2021 Open Studios event from the Lamar Dodd School of Art will be held on November 13th. From 2-5pm, studios at the Lamar Dodd School of Art Main Building and the Ceramics Building will be open to the public; studios at Thomas Street Art Complex will be open from 4-7pm. Open Studios will conclude with a party, also at the Thomas Street Art Complex, from 6-9pm (food, drinks, and music). Several other exhibitions will be ongoing at the Dodd Galleries and the Athenaeum this November. Trevor Paglen’s solo exhibition, Vision After Seeing, is on view at the Athenaeum. Paglen is a conceptual artist, writer, and geographer who uses lens-based technologies and public records to explore places, objects and structures that are typically hidden from view. Two student-led exhibitions, Pinky Promise and 8.19%, will continue through November 18th at the Lamar Dodd Main Building. In Pinky Promise Jacob Wan and Dodd MFA candidate Lila Villalobos create parallel narratives in their work to examine humanness and how love and experience shapes one’s understanding of the world. 8.19% exhibits the work of undergraduate and graduate members of the newly formed Black Artists Alliance at the Lamar Dodd School of Art.

Join us as we celebrate our vibrant arts community! The Dodd Galleries are open M-F, 9am-5:00pm and until 9pm every 3rd Thursday. The Athenaeum is open W-S, 12pm-6pm, and until 9pm every 3rd Thursday. The Athenaeum is closed on UGA home game days and during university holidays and winter and summer breaks. Events at the Dodd Galleries and the Athenaeum are always FREE and open to the public.
