In 2022, for the first time, the course was taught in both the spring and fall terms, with over 45 students—primarily drawn from the Graphic Design MFA and BFA programs, as well as students from Printmaking, Illustration, Industrial Design, Nature–Culture–Sustainability Studies, and Brown University—testing tools, materials, and interpreting open-ended briefs meant to inspire, challenge, and motivate new ways of making. A focus on process is a key tenet of the course. Newly Formed has been co-taught by Christopher Sleboda and Kathleen Sleboda (Nlaka’pamux) since 2016, with each class offering the opportunity to rethink themes and tweak briefs. Newly Formed has traditionally woven in a public-facing component, using publications, the Internet, and exhibitions as platforms to share outcomes, documentation, and methodology. \n \n\nSplit View exhibition poster\n \n\nSplit View installation shot\n \n\nSplit View installation shot\n
