Research Detail
I have always favored artists who have an eclectic body of work that displays many interests, and that is my aspiration as an artist. I wish to make work that is rooted in a rich historical foundation yet which speaks to the contemporary viewer. Lately I've become interested in melding the languages of representation and geometric abstraction using seemingly-haphazard compositions based on mundane motifs, such as turkeys in the front yard, or a neighbor's cat on our futon, as the foundation. Formal elements such as mark making, edge quality, texture and color composition are increasingly preoccupying me, even as I remain an incurable narrative artist. I'm also enjoying experimenting with digital image alteration and mixed-media drawing in addition to my much-beloved oil painting.

My previous body of work portrayed contemporary mythological narrative figurative paintings where friends and acquaintances acted as gods and goddesses; the more recent work is a counterbalance to the complex theatrical staging and other-worldliness of that work - now I'd like to make work that inhabits this world and this moment a bit more, and which seeks humor and splendor from chance everyday occurrences.
