Using memories, overheard conversations, family histories, found photographs, and other ephemera as source material, I construct tableaux which, cumulatively, reconstruct the community of my past based on my present understanding of my upbringing. In this act of reconstruction my work likewise serves as witness to my internal struggle to reconcile past and future. This attempt at reconciliation explores the emotional ground between pride and embarrassment. As clarifying moments I look to local, idiosyncratic manifestations of pride and theatrical gesture (increasingly buried in the great cultural flattening precipitated by the internet), which emerge from regional cultures to both inform and perform identity.
