Safety Second is a flute and percussion duo dedicated to the performance of new music. They seek to break the mold of traditional performance practice and to engage with their audience. For their first recital, held at the Dodd Galleries, the duo asks the audience to move about the gallery during the performance to view the exhibition Rosemary Mayer: Beware of All Definitions and to encourage the experience of new and different sounds.

Alexis Letourneau (flute) is in her fourth year of her music education degree at the University of Georgia, studying under the tutelage of Angela Jones-Reus. She has participated in master classes with Marianne Gedigian, James Hall, and Michael Hasel. She is an active teacher and performer in Athens, Georgia and is a co-founder and flutist of Athens-based new music ensembles Incongruency and Safety Second.

Nick Martinez (percussion) is a fourth year undergraduate student at the University of Georgia. He is majoring in Music Education and Music Theory at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music and is a member of the UGA Percussion Studio. His research has been published in the UGA undergraduate research journal, “The Classic Journal.”
