VITICULTURE & ENOLOGY MAYMESTER
Offered Maymester (Arrival in Rome May 9 - June 2, 2010, date students must vacate the dorm)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Cortona is the perfect place to experience Italian culture while learning about the economic and historical significance of wine and the science of its production. Students will share dorm rooms on campus in a renovated 15th century monastery and dinners in a local family-run restaurant.

The course is co-taught by professors from the Departments of Horticulture, Plant Pathology and Food Science & Technology. You’ll study the health implications of wine consumption, characteristics of different grape varieties, cultivation techniques, grapevine diseases, and pest management. Enology topics covered include wine types, steps in the winemaking process, microbiological and chemical processes associated with vinification, and the sensory implications of winemaking decisions.

Participants also learn to identify common taste components of red and white wines, identify common varietals by sensory analysis, and how to pair wine with food.

Enrollment is limited to 30 students, so apply early!

PATH (HORT) (FDST) 3050 Viticulture and Enology in the Mediterranean Region.
Maymester 4 undergraduate semester hours.
Prerequisites*: HORT 2000 or (BIOL 1103 and BIOL 1103L) or BIOL 1107-1107L or PBIO 1210 or equivalent.
The format will consist of a combination of lectures, horticulture and sensory labs, as well as field trips to vineyards and wineries.

*Preferably students who have completed 2 years at UGA or another accredited institution. This course is targeted for undergraduate students with primary interests in the areas of horticulture, food science, and/or history/anthropology. However, any undergraduate student with an interest in viticulture or enology can enjoy this course. The course is not major specific. Enrollment will be limited to 30.
