Offered Spring Semester

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
These active, writing-intensive courses are designed to complement the arts elements of the Cortona Program. The program invites applications from juniors and seniors, as well as from sophomores with solid credentials.

ENGL3300, Women in Literature. English Poetesses; Italian Art
Prerequisites: One 2000-level ENGL or CMLT course
Why does the mythic nineteenth-century Poetess long for Italy? Why do dreams of Italy embody actual British women poets’ artistic, erotic, and patriotic desires? Romantic poetess-novels by Germaine de Staël and Margaret Atwood will open explorations of Italy’s significance for writers including Felicia Hemans, Letitia Elizabeth Landon, Anna Jameson, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, A. Mary F. Robinson, Christina Rossetti, and Michael Field.

ENGL 4590, Topics in Victorian Lit. Nineteenth-Century Italy and the Not-So Grand Tour
Prerequisites: One 2000-level ENGL class; one more 2000-level ENGL or one 2000-level CMLT class
Novels by Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Henry James, and E. M. Forster; poetry by Robert Browning, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and Arthur Hugh Clough; travel writings, famous and infamous: through these, we will explore Victorian engagements with the traditions and shocks of travel in Italy. Is there such a thing as a Victorian Grand Tour? (And what does “Victorian” really mean? Does Hawthorne count?)

Courses offered may vary from term to term. Please check with our office for the most recent course offerings. Some classes may be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment.
